Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why did you stop doing transfers in California?

A: Due to new restrictions on FFL's presented by Senate Bill 1384, all dealers, including home based dealers, were forced to install costly and invasive camera systems within their "licensed premises", which for home based FFL's meant installing cameras and microphones inside of their homes, and maintaining both video and audio recordings for a minimum of one year. Implementing this in our shop would have cost us thousands of dollars, and ultimately we decided to not compromise the privacy of our home.

Q: What's with the Beetle in the logo?

A: That's my beloved 1973 VW Super Beetle, "Blitz". If you come by the shop, you might get to meet her. She's how I became known as the "Gearhead Gunsmith", as I spent many hours tinkering, repairing, and upgrading her while I was still in college.

Q: And what about the zip ties holding up the license plate?

A: There's a funny story to that. Did you know that all cars in California must have a front license plate, even if they never came with one to begin with? I didn't! Anyways, I did that little fix on the fly, in the parking lot at the Hawthorne Police Station sometime in 2019 and I never got around to making a proper license plate bracket. It got me out of a "fix-it" ticket, so I guess that's all that really mattered! The officer that signed off on it found it to be quite amusing!

Q: Do you buy firearms?

A: No, we no longer purchase firearms.

Q: Do you provide consignment sales services?

A: No, we do not offer consignment sales as a service.

Q: What are your qualifications as a gunsmith?

A: Aside from almost 10 years of experience as a hobby gunsmith for my own personal projects, and 8 years of experience as a machinist, I hold a certification in General Gunsmithing from Ashworth College, as well as an Armorer's Certification for both the 1911 and AR platforms from the Sonoran Desert Institute.

Q: Can I mail my firearm(s) for you to work on?

A: Absolutely! Please refer to our "Policies and Terms" page to see what you need to do.

Q: Do you release on "Undetermined" Status?

A: Generally, yes. So long as the buyer is patient and understanding with us since a Delay is outside of our control, we will release as soon as the DROS moves to "Undetermined". We also require that the buyer complete a LiveScan (BOF 8016RR) to verify their eligibility to own a firearm prior to us releasing it on an "undetermined" status. For more information on the LiveScan, visit the DOJ website here; https://oag.ca.gov/firearms

A: Unfortunately, as of 12 / 20 / 2023 we stopped accepting firearms for DROS transfer. Prior to that, we released on undetermined status after the completion of a Personal Firearms Eligibility Check (PFEC).
